Summary/Objective 
Big Grove’s brewing Production Manager is responsible for the planning and coordination of the entire brewing process. From ensuring quality, efficiency and compliance with safety standards. Key responsibilities include creating production schedules, managing production staff and budgets, maintaining inventory of raw materials and the finished product. This role uses communication and collaboration with departments like sales and quality control to develop new recipes and meet market standards. To perform this role they must manage staff, schedule beer production runs, and make sure that the brewery’s equipment is working correctly. The brewing production manager will work closely with the executive team and Director of Brewing to ensure that the brewing process remains consistent and that beer production goals are met.

Production Oversight:

  • Manage and supervise the brewing, cellaring and packaging process to ensure high-quality, consistent beer is produced. When a problem occurs with the production process, the PM is the first point of contact.

Scheduling & Planning: 

  • The Production Manager will develop and execute daily production schedules, managing team schedules and production workflow to meet demand and deadlines.
  • Must ensure that beers are produced to a schedule that maximizes the efficiency of the brewery and its staff.

Team Management:

  • Lead, train and manage the production team, fostering a positive and cohesive work environment while holding staff accountable for policy and procedure.
  • Develop training and mentorship programs to improve the skills of the team and to properly measure the performance and roles adequately.

Quality Control:

  • Maintain and improve quality assurance and control processes, monitoring raw ingredients, samples and finished products to ensure they meet standards.
  • They are responsible for beer movement throughout the brewery and making changes based on any issues that occur. Those issues could include changes to production goals, issues with raw materials, or mechanical issues.
  • They attend daily and weekly tastings to test the quality of the beer being produced. They may also work with laboratory staff to evaluate chemical composition analysis of the beers being created and raw materials being used.

Inventory Management:

  • Oversee inventory of raw materials, brewing supplies and finished beer ensuring sufficient stock for production and sales while maintaining freshness.
  • They will help sales and operations manage the budget for beer production and take necessary steps to ensure the budget is met during production runs.
  • The brewing PM will be involved with suppliers of raw materials for brewing beer, packaging suppliers, and brewing equipment suppliers. They must maintain good working relationships with these companies and individuals.
  • The brewing production manager must adopt a philosophy of continual improvement. They will constantly look for ways to brew beer more efficiently and increase the quality of the finished product. They will also help troubleshoot any problems that occur in the brewing process.

Process Improvement:

  • Continually improve production processes for efficiency, cost-effectiveness and quality enhancement

Recipe Development:

  • Collaborate with the Director of Brewing and Head Brewers to formulate new beer recipes, considering budget constraints and current market trends

Compliance & Safety

  • They must ensure the brewery is a safe place to work and they play a role in enforcing safety standards on the production line. The beer production manager will also perform safety audits and ensure that anyone visiting the brewery does so safely.
  • The brewery production manager will be very vigilant when it comes to workplace hygiene. They must ensure that all machinery is correctly maintained and sanitized after use and the facility is kept clean and organized.

Supervisory Responsibility

Yes. Supervises the production team.  Works closely with the Director of Brewing, Director of Quality.

Work Environment 

  • Temperature Variability: The brewery floor may be warm due to production equipment or cooler in storage areas.
  • Loud Noise Levels: Constant operation of machinery, conveyor belts, and forklifts may require hearing protection.
  • Fast-Paced Setting: Production deadlines and efficiency standards demand a high level of focus and speed.
  • Wet or Slippery Floors: Frequent cleaning, liquid spills, and condensation are common, requiring proper footwear.
  • Exposure to Chemicals: Cleaning and sanitizing agents are used regularly, requiring protective gear.

Physical Demands 

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Standing for Long Periods: Requires being on your feet for extended shifts, often 8+ hours. 
  • Frequent Lifting & Carrying: Lifting heavy equipment , cases of beer and kegs, often weighing up to 50 lbs. 
  • Fast & Continuous Movement: Walking, bending, reaching, and turning quickly to keep up with packaging demands. 
  • Repetitive Motions – Engaging in tasks such as packing, stacking, labeling, and operating machinery.
  • Endurance & Stamina: High energy and focus needed to sustain fast-paced work for long shifts. 
  • Dexterity & Hand-Eye Coordination: Essential for precise packaging, canning,etc. 

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time and in-person position. Hours of work/days may vary from week to week.  The business is open 7 days a week.  Evening and weekends are likely a key requirement. Expected hours are 45 to 50 hours per week.

Travel

Travel is required to our satellite taprooms.

Preferred Education and Experience

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Up to 1 year of related management experience
  3. 2-5 years of experience working in the brewery industry
  4. Lean Certification 
  5. Knowledge in ERP/MRP Systems
