The Shift Brewer is responsible for the execution of the daily brew schedule, from milling-in to knockout. This role requires a high degree of consistency and the ability to multitask in a fast-paced production environment. The position will operate the brewhouse, ensuring that every batch meets our specifications for gravity, volume, and flavor profile while maintaining a safe and efficient workspace.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Wort Production: Execute the full brewing process on our 30bbl 3-vessel brewhouse. This includes milling, mashing, lautering, boiling, whirlpooling, and wort cooling.
- Raw Material Management: Accurately weigh and stage malts, hops, and salts according to recipe specifications.
- Process Monitoring: Track and record critical data points including mash temperatures, pH, kettle gravities, and knockout volumes.
- Brewhouse Cleaning: Perform thorough CIP of the brewhouse, heat exchanger, and wort lines. Maintain a "clean as you go" philosophy to ensure the facility remains clean and organized.
- Yeast Management: Assist in yeast pitching and monitoring fermentation starts to ensure a healthy transition from the hot side to the cellar.
- Troubleshooting: Monitor brewhouse mechanical equipment and communicate any maintenance needs or process deviations to the Head Brewer immediately.
- Communication & Task Management: Carefully follow work schedule and complete tasks with efficiency and attention to detail. Communicate clearly and concisely with all team members regarding task status.
- Safety & SOP Adherence: Follow all established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and safety protocols. This includes the safe handling of chemicals, proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and maintaining a safe workspace.
- Detailed Record Keeping: Maintain precise logs of all production activities. Utilizes both physical logs and brewery management software to track gravities, temperatures, times, and other relevant production data.
- Cleanliness & Organization: Maintain a clean and organized production environment. Ensures tools are clean and returned to designated locations and that cellar and packaging areas remain tidy and efficient.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Age Requirement: Must be 21 years of age or older.
- 2+ years of professional brewing experience in a production setting.
- Formal brewing education is a plus but not required.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and a "problem-solver" mindset.
- Ability to work flexible shifts (early mornings, late nights, or weekends).
- Proven ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team. Must possess strong critical thinking skills and the ability to follow SOPs and verbal directions precisely.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to speak loudly and clearly in a high-decibel production environment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & ENVIRONMENT:
- Strength & Stamina: Ability to stand and move for the duration of their shift, lift 55 lbs repeatedly, and maneuver 165 lb kegs.
- Agility: Ability to use ladders/step ladders and frequently kneel, stoop, crouch, and perform repetitive motions.
- Work Environment: Comfort working in a loud industrial environment with exposure to hot and cold temperatures, wet floors, and dust.
- Safety: Ability to work safely around mechanical parts and hazardous chemicals (acids/caustics) while using required PPE.
